FAQ

Why do you have both Gentle and Ultra Gentle products? What’s the difference?

Not all sensitive skin is the same. Some skin needs support and nourishment. Other skin needs as little stimulation as possible. That’s why Ariella Apothecary offers two distinct formulation paths: Gentle products are made for sensitive, dry, or compromised skin that still tolerates a small number of thoughtfully chosen botanicals. These formulas focus on barrier repair, moisture retention, and skin comfort while remaining intentionally minimal.Ultra Gentle products are designed for reactive, flare-prone skin — including those with eczema, psoriasis, MCAS, or unexplained sensitivities. These formulas are stripped back even further, avoiding unnecessary botanicals, fragrance, and common triggers. They focus on calming, protecting, and supporting the skin barrier without pushing the immune system. If your skin often reacts “out of nowhere,” stings with most products, or flares during stress, illness, or hormonal shifts, Ultra Gentle is usually the better starting point.

Are your products fragrance-free?

Yes. Ariella Apothecary offers an Ultra Gentle, fragrance-free version of nearly every product.

Our Ultra Gentle line is always unscented and made without synthetic fragrance or essential oils. These formulas are created specifically for highly sensitive, reactive, or easily overwhelmed skin.

Some products are also available in our Gentle line, which may include slowly infused botanicals for skin support. These are never scented and are never formulated for aroma.

If a product has any natural scent at all, it comes only from the raw ingredients themselves—not added fragrance of any kind.

Are your products safe for eczema, psoriasis, or reactive skin?

Our products are designed with reactive skin in mind, but skin is deeply individual. Many customers with eczema, psoriasis, MCAS, and chronic sensitivity do very well with our formulas — especially the Ultra Gentle line. That said, we always recommend patch testing, even with minimal formulas. If your skin is currently flaring, broken, or inflamed, Ultra Gentle products are the safest place to start.

Why don’t you use essential oils?

Essential oils can be beneficial for some people — but they are also a common trigger for sensitive and reactive skin.At Ariella Apothecary, we prioritize immune calm over trend-driven ingredients. Essential oils are excluded from our Ultra Gentle line and used very sparingly (if at all) in Gentle formulations. Our philosophy is simple: If an ingredient risks causing unnecessary stimulation, it doesn’t belong.

Are your products organic and natural?

We use organic and responsibly sourced ingredients whenever possible, prioritizing quality, purity, and skin compatibility over labels alone. Every ingredient is chosen for a reason — not to check a marketing box.

Are your products handmade?

Yes. Every Ariella Apothecary product is handcrafted in small batches. This allows us to maintain quality control, consistency, and intention in every formula — and to adjust thoughtfully as we learn from real skin experiences.

What is MCAS and why does it affect skin so much?

MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) involves mast cells — immune cells that release chemicals like histamine — becoming overly reactive or releasing at inappropriate times.Because mast cells are abundant in the skin, people with MCAS often experience:

  • Burning, stinging, or itching from products labeled “gentle”
  • Sudden reactions to ingredients they’ve used before
  • Skin that flares with stress, illness, hormones, or temperature changes
  • Redness, rashes, hives, or a constant feeling of inflammation

When mast cells are easily triggered, skincare isn’t just about moisture — it’s about immune calm.

Why do so many “clean” or “natural” products still cause flares with MCAS?

Many natural products are still biologically active. Essential oils, strong botanicals, extracts, and even some plant-based actives can stimulate mast cells — especially when the skin barrier is compromised. For MCAS-prone skin, more ingredients often means more signals for the immune system to react to, even if those ingredients are technically “good.” This is why Ariella Apothecary prioritizes intentional minimalism, not ingredient overload.

Which Ariella Apothecary products are best for MCAS?

Our Ultra Gentle line was created specifically with highly reactive and MCAS-prone skin in mind. These formulas:

  • Avoid essential oils and fragrance
  • Limit botanicals to only what’s truly supportive
  • Focus on barrier repair, moisture retention, and skin protection
  • Are designed to reduce stimulation, not add more

If you have MCAS or suspect mast cell involvement, Ultra Gentle is always the safest place to start.

Why are your skincare products so focused on MCAS and extremely sensitive skin?

Because the people with the most sensitive skin are the ones most often left out of skincare. Most products on the market — even those labeled “gentle” or “for sensitive skin” — are still designed for skin that can tolerate stimulation, actives, fragrance, or frequent product changes. For people with MCAS or highly reactive skin, those same products can cause burning, flares, or delayed reactions that feel confusing and discouraging. Ariella Apothecary was created from lived experience with skin that couldn’t “push through” reactions anymore. Instead of asking reactive skin to adapt to skincare, we chose to adapt skincare to reactive skin. That means:

  • Formulating for immune calm, not trends
  • Prioritizing barrier support over stimulation
  • Removing ingredients that commonly trigger mast cells
  • Keeping formulas intentionally minimal and predictable

When skincare works for MCAS-prone skin, it often works beautifully for anyone who wants calmer, more resilient skin. We don’t believe ultra-sensitive skin should be a niche — it should be the standard.
